Schneider Electric is pleased to announce that their Eurotherm, Italy office located in Guanzate (Province of Como), is the first Italian building of the group to become Zero CO2 by reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases used in the infrastructures and operations of the building.
According to the Schneider Electric definition, a building is classed Zero CO2 when any of its sites whether factory, office, R&D center, service center, etc., uses only renewable energy sources, purchased from suppliers or produced on site; moreover, emissions must be reduced without purchasing carbon credits (CO2 offsets); data about CO2 emissions from energy consumption in the site must be disclosed externally with detailed information.
Making buildings carbon neutral or zero CO2 is an integral part of Schneider Electric’s sustainability goals. In fact, the group is committed to making all of its operations carbon neutral, eliminating the emissions generated directly by its activities (emissions of scope 1 and 2 defined by the GHG protocol) and reaching net zero CO2 goal by 2030; finally, the company intends to bring its entire value chain to be Net Zero CO2, thus also eliminating indirect emissions (scope 3 emissions) by 2050.
These ambitious goals were announced at the COP 25 conference.
Eurotherm are a company within the group with worldwide offices and the Guanzate office is a 2000m2 building, built in 1984, with more than 60 employees. As part of the group, the company has been providing industrial automation and process control solutions across a wide range of industries for over 50 years; a trusted partner for its customers, Eurotherm offers technologies that meet specific needs with the added value of greater efficiency and cost savings.
To achieve the zero CO2 goal, the building underwent an important energy improvement project, still in progress: the heating and cooling systems were replaced with heat pumps, the lighting was optimized to reduce energy consumption, adopting 100% high-efficiency LED lamps for outdoor lighting and 60% high-efficiency LED lamps for indoor lighting. The plants are powered exclusively by energy from renewable sources, with an energy mix guaranteed by the within the supplier contract. The complete abatement of the building’s emissions avoids the production of 90 tons of CO2 every year.
“We are extremely proud of this achievement, which we believe to be an essential element of our contribution to a more sustainable global future. Corporate sustainability is one of the key elements in the success of our business”, says Giuseppe Mariano, CEO of Eurotherm by Schneider Electric Italy.
“I would like to emphasize that it is not a point of arrival, but a stage in a path that will allow us to further improve the sustainability and energy efficiency performance of the building. In fact, we are working to implement digital energy management with EcoStruxure Resource Advisor software and produce on-site electricity with photovoltaic panels to be installed on the roof of the building and in the company’s car park”, he added.
“We pay utmost attention to sustainability across all Schneider Electric and its group companies’ sites in Italy. We leverage best practice and technologies that we ourselves develop, offering our customers solutions that help them obtain high energy and operational efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” comments Stefania Iandolo, Schneider Electric’s Sustainability Impact Leader Italy. “Eurotherm’s results give us great satisfaction and encourages us to multiply our commitment to ensure that Italy is at the forefront of the sustainability path, which we pursue with extremely ambitious objectives, such as that of achieving net-zero operational emissions from all our activities by 2030.”
In Guanzate, sustainability is also pursued with other initiatives, such as the progressive replacement of 45 company vehicles with hybrid-powered vehicles (currently 20% of the total) and the availability of charging stations for electric vehicles. These are “daily” but important choices, in line with the goal of converting the entire global corporate fleet to electric vehicles by 2025, which Schneider Electric has set by joining the EV100 initiative.
